A Journey of a Lifetime

“I knew you few would be interested!” said Pn Zakiah with a wide grin on her face. Application forms handed over and so the journey begins.

First up, a theory test with 40 question, some so tough that even Pn Zakiah didn’t know how to solve. (Oops… Sorry Pn Zakiah).  We made it through, and here comes the major part, building the car, with minimum requirements stricter than ever before. After 4 weeks and hundreds of man-hours of designing, building, arguing, discussing and redesigning again and again, came the day of judgement, 5th July 2012. 9 a.m., The Grand Hall, Taylor’s Lakeside University.

List of teams were displayed on the screen and guess what, shock horror. Who are our competitors? 60 teams from 23 schools including MCKK, MRSM Perak, SMJK Katolik, just to name a few. Intimidated? Sort of. Anyways, presentation time. We wouldn’t say it was very good as we didn’t have enough time but we knew we hit the judges during Q&A. Giving them answers they never expected, we literally left their mouths wide open.

We were all smiles coming out of the room. Next, the furthest distance test. First round, not so good, but we came back in the second round, scoring full points. Going on, the specific distance challenge. This time, it was a one hit wonder. Our margin of error was only 0.833% (2.5 cm out of 300cm)! We took a big sigh of relief. And so we waited for the other teams to finish and waited for the results.

Results came, with a few false calls during the special awards presentation as our team’s name (Fast and Serious) was similar to two other teams’ names. Then, second runner up. We have had enough of Fast and Fabulous 5 and Fast and Furious. Finally, it was Fast and Serious! We couldn’t believe it even as we went up to collect our prize with big grins on our faces. We were hoping for our other 2 teams, Griffindor and Infinity to bag the other two prizes but unfortunately, they didn’t make it.

Nonetheless, everyone was happy and we made our way back to school. We would like to thank all three teacher advisors, Pn Zakiah, Miss Wong and En. Hanafiah for guiding us through the whole competition and helping us in every way possible.

We hope this success story will be an encouragement for our juniors to join next year and also a driving force for next year’s teams to do even better. There used to be a saying for engineers, “the sky’s the limit” but engineers have brought man even higher than the sky therefore for engineers and all aspiring engineers out there especially in our school, “there is no limit”!
